ἀστράγαλος, ὁ, 1) der Wirbelknochen, bes. Halswirbel, Hom. Iliad. 14, 466 Od. 10, 560. 11, 65; ἐκ δ' ἐάγη καίριον ἀστράγαλον Diod. 15 (VII, 632). – 2) das Sprungbein, der Knöchel in der Ferse, Her. 3, 129 ὁ ἀστρ. ἐξεχώρησε ἐκ τῶν ἄρϑρων; Xen. Equ. 1, 15 von Pferden; vgl. Arist. H. A. 2, 1. Sie wurden in Peitschen eingeflochten, ἡ ἐκ τῶν ἀστραγάλων μάστιξ Luc. Asin. 38; οὐ λήψεταί τις τοῦτον ἀστραγάλῳ D. S. 4, 34, vgl. ἀστραγαλωτός; Theocr. 10, 36 werden zierliche Füße mit ἀστραγάλοις verglichen, nach Schol. λευκοὶ ὡς οἱ ἀστρ. – 3) gew. im plur., Würfel, zuerst aus den Knöcheln einiger Thiere, später aus Elfenbein u. Stein gemacht; Iliad. 23, 88 ἀμφ' ἀστραγάλοισι χολωϑείς, wegen der Würfel, des Würfelspiels, v. l. ἀμφ' ἀστραγάλῃσιν ἐρύσας (?ἐρίσσας?), Scholl. Did.; vgl. auch Scholl. Aristonic.; Plat. Theaet. 154 cf; Ar. Vesp. 296 u. Sp. Sie waren auf 2 Seiten rund, auf 4 mit Punkten so bezeichnet, daß 1 u. 6, u. 3. u. 4 einander gegenüberstanden ( κύβοι waren auf allen 6 Seiten bezeichnet). Man warf immer 4 Knöchel aus der Hand od. aus einem Becher, πυργός (vgl. διάσειστος, Harpocr. u. das. Men. wie Aesch. 1, 59); der beste Wurf hieß Ἀφροδίτη, Μίδας od. Ἡρακλῆς, wenn die Würfel 1, 3, 4, 6 zeigten, μηδενὸς ἀστραγάλου πεσόντος ἴσῳ σχήματι Luc. Amor. 16; der schlechteste κύων, wenn alle dieselbe Augenzahl zeigten, der Wurf ein Pasch war, s. Eustath. ad Od. 1397, 34. Bei Antip. Sid. 93 (VII, 427) werden 3 Würfe, Αλέξανδρος, ἔφηβος, Χῖος (vgl. Leon. Tar. 84 (VII, 422), als die schlechtesten bezeichnet). Vgl. κύβος u. πενταλιϑίζὲιν. – 4) an den ionischen Säulen der Schnörkel am Capital. – 5) ein Hülsengewächs, astragalus baeticus, Linn. – 6) ein Maaß bei den Aerzten.
