2 Bad Cast
Classified as a "major" defect by the Silk Association of America. Casts are the beginning of new cocoon filaments. Appearance - Abruptly increased diameter in a raw-silk thread. This defect may vary in length. Causes - A single cocoon filament may not have been properly " cast " on to the raw-silk thread in the reeling operation; or a " layer " of filaments may have loosened itself from the cocoon and have come off the cocoon simultaneously by passing through the rollers porcelain gauge-eyelets in a bulk, which either suddenly or gradually decreases to the required number of single cocoon filaments - that is, to the normal size of the raw-silk thread. -

8 Cotton, Rusty
COTTON, RUSTYThis is damaged cotton, and may be due to defective baling, whereby the fibre is exposed to bad weather during transit. Bad weather before the cotton is picked, and when the ripe bolls are open also causes this defect. -
9 Blending Wool
After the materials have been well opened and cleansed, a large square bed of one material or colour (say 12-ft. X 12-ft., 6-in. to 9-in. thick), is made on the floor, then a bed of the second element in the mixing is spread over the preceding one, and so on. Each layer is levelled by beating with sticks; and oil is usually distributed by a rose spout as evenly as possible, according to requirements, on the layers. Oiling is, however, better done by a spraying apparatus attached to the teazer. No oil must come on cotton in a blend, but remanufactured products require more oil than wool. Scotch manufacturers usually put on 1-lb. oil to 5-lb. wool. There is little doubt that this proportion is excessive and militates against good results, but bad customs die hard. Dyed wool being harsher than undyed wool needs more oil. When the pile of layers reaches a convenient height (say 6 feet), it is broken down in vertical slices, shaken, and put through the teazer to mix thoroughly. Improved methods of blending wool are now being adopted, principally consisting of air trunk conveyers (see Blending Wool, Modem System) -
10 Bulls And Bears
To be a " bull " means that a man is expecting everything that is bad to happen to the crop of cotton; he will say the crop is small, that it is inferior in quality, will exaggerate the probable demand and underrate the stocks in port; in fact, do almost anything to force up prices. The " bear " is just the opposite and he always looks on the bright side and expects low prices. Thus the " bull " buys cotton or futures which he does not intend to hold; he expects the price to rise so that he can sell at a higher figure (see Bears) -
11 Cast Wool
A rough, coarse, bad-bred fleece of wool. -
12 Cockled Yarn
A bad fault in yarns, and when present, the yarn is very difficult to use. This cockled (or wormy) yarn may look all right, but in places it is very brittle. Cotton of long fibres mixed with shorter staple will cause the defect as well as faulty setting of the machinery. -
13 Cocoons Taches
Spotted or rotten cocoons giving foul, bad silk, of a dark colour. -
14 Cotton Grade
Refers to its appearance as regards cleanliness, colour and freedom from impurities, such as leaf. Bloom and brightness adds to its grade and bad colour or streakiness detracts. Grade is determined by appearance and by comparison with the " surface " of the standards. Staple, which is separately judged, is not considered in determining grade. -
15 Cover
By " cover of cloth " is meant the full uniform appearance that all plain goods should have, in which all ends and picks are spread equidistant from each other. A well-covered cloth is the opposite to a " reedy " cloth, which shows the ends in pairs. A reedy cloth when bad is often called " grinny." A reedy cloth can be caused by careless weaving, a fault that can be stopped if the loom is properly set. " Reediness " is most difficult to remove when the cloth has insufficient ends to spread out evenly. -
16 Cut And Stringy Cotton
These terms cover faults that are caused in the ginning process by the faulty setting of the saws and the breastplates through which the saws revolve. It is a serious fault and causes much loss and bad work in the spinning process.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Cut And Stringy Cotton

17 Lacerna
A loose garment, with a hood, worn by the Romans over the toga, open in front and fastened by a buckle under the throat or on the right shoulder. Usually of a dark colour and worn as a protection in bad weather but in the earlier times exclusively as a military garment (see also Abolla, Pasnula and Pallium) -
18 Peat Fibre
Fibres have been obtained from peat since 1890 when G. H. Berand, London, patented a process for the manufacture of " Berandine," a fluffy, fibrous mass of peat. Later several other methods were patented in Austria and Germany for producing fibre by decortication. Jegeaus of Goteborg, Sweden, made a study of such processes and the fibres produced were used to a limited extent for hygienic clothes, floor covers, stuffing, etc. The strength of the fibre is claimed to be much greater than that of wool, and as it is a bad conductor of heat some experts believe it to be well suited for clothes (see Petanella) -
19 Shoves
Broken and bad fibres left over after scutching flax and used for coarse bagging and roofing felts. -
20 Slack Selvedge
A bad weaving fault which may cause much damage during finishing. It may be caused by the yarn being wound carelessly on the warp beam at the sides; by the selvedge yarn being too coarse, or not so elastic as the other yarn; by worn temples not keeping the cloth out; and in many other ways.
