ANGLETERRE (Point d') see point laceLace made by Flemish makers settled in England during the reign of Charles II. The English Parliament had passed an Act prohibiting the importation of all foreign lace. England, not being able to produce the necessary flax, only made an inferior article. 6 Point D'angleterre
A name given to fine Brussels lace sometimes sold on the Continent as English lace. It is a pillow lace. The term was originated by smugglers who introduced Brussels lace into France pretending it was made in England. 7 Taffeta D'angleterre
French all-silk taffeta, highly glazed and used for scarfs, dresses, curtains, etc. Originally from England and made in three grades. The wide and narrow black grades were very heavy and alike in quality and construction, finished stiff and used for caps. 8 Velours Ras D'angleterre
French uncut velvet made 20-in. to 22-in. wide not including selvedges. The warp had 4,000 ends of two-fold organzine. Two wefts formed the foundation, and the uncut pile formed ribs from selvedge to selvedge similar to the gros-grain. One weft was two-fold tram for ground, and the other was a 20 to 30 ply tram to form the ribs. 9 Brussels Point Lace
Lace with an open pattern made part open and part closed stitch, giving a shaded effect. They are very fine laces. It is called " Rose Point " when the design is of roses, and " Point Gaze " when the designs are of very fine, open, delicate motifs. Originally, Brussels was hand-made, designs worked separately, and applied to a net ground worked with bobbins.
