adv 1. Наречия almost и nearly употребляются только с глаголом to be:It was almost/nearly five when we came — Было около пяти, когда мы пришли, но не we arrived (came) at almost five.
He is almost blind.
I have almost forgotten about it.
The door opened almost before I knocked,
He is almost certain it was so.
Оба наречия часто образуют сочетания с all, every, always:nearly/almost all,
nearly/almost always.
(7). Только nearly употребляется с предшествующим very, so, pretty в разговорной речи:I have very/pretty nearly forgotten about it.
We were very nearly at the end of our journey.
(8). Только almost употребляется: а) когда речь идет об абстрактных понятиях или о том, что не поддается измерению:It was almost blue, but not quite ( но не nearly);
б) в отрицательных предложениях и в сочетаниях с never, nobody, not, none:She almost never mentioned it ( но не nearly);
в) с наречиями, оканчивающимися на -ly:He is almost certainly there.
He asked me almost angrily ( но неnearly);
г) со словом like:It made me feel almost like a host.
(9). Almost и hardly образуют положительные/отрицательные пары:almost never — hardly ever,
almost nobody — hardly anybody,
almost nowhere — hardly anywhere.
I can hardly see him in the fog —
Hardly had we arrived when it began to rain — Не успели мы войти, как начался дождь.
(12). For almost 1. и 2. see about, adv. -
