1 Abolla
A thick woollen mantle, worn originally by the military class of Romans to distinguish them from civilians who wore the toga, but later adopted by the stoic philosophers and other Roman citizens. It was in the form of a piece of cloth folded double and fastened round the throat by a brooch. -
2 Abolla Major
The long blanket worn as a cloak by the Greek philosophers. It was adopted by them as an expression of their humility, because it was mostly worn by the poorer classes in Rome. -
3 Lacerna
A loose garment, with a hood, worn by the Romans over the toga, open in front and fastened by a buckle under the throat or on the right shoulder. Usually of a dark colour and worn as a protection in bad weather but in the earlier times exclusively as a military garment (see also Abolla, Pasnula and Pallium)
