ὀρφανός, ή, όν (cp. Pla., Phd. 65, 116a, where the feelings of Socrates’ friends are described thus: ἀτεχνῶς ἡγούμενοι ὥσπερ πατρὸς στερηθέντες διάξειν ὀρφανοὶ τὸν ἔπειτα βίον =‘thinking that we would have to spend the rest of our lives just like children deprived of their father’.
