(Ortiz). "Son tres tambores de carácter religioso, usados en las ceremonias de los cultos que en Cuba practican los lucumíes o yorubas y sus descendientes criollos. Según el diccionario yoruba de Oxford, batá es un tambor usado por los fieles de Changó y de Egungun. "La orquesta lucumí o es la de los batá o la de los ágbe o chekeré. Tambor! Piel! Cuero! Sandalia. "Posiblemente batá procede de los fonemas onomatopéyicos "ba", suave y "ta", duro. Los tres tambores de la liturgia yoruba reciben propiamente el nombre de "aña" o "añá" y el nombre profano de ilú". En espera de una mejor opinión, suponemos que la palabra aña o añá es corruptela criolla o dialectal de las voces yorubas "dza" o sea "dya", significan "guerrear" y también "enfurecerse una tempestad". El prefijo "a" forma sustantivos con una raíz verbal; por eso ádza o ádya, y en definitiva aña o añá, puede decir "guerrero", "peleador. perro "tempestad furiosa" y sobre todo "un duende o espíritu que pelea con brujería". Aña es la potencia sobrenatural de los batá, que los defiende, truena y pelea contra sus enemigos". "Aña es un objeto misterioso con potencia sacromágica que se introduce en las cerradas cajas resonantes de los tambores batá, cuando son construidos y consagrados". "El conocimiento de este nombré criptico tiene en sí cierto poder sacromágico que el "olori" o músico emplea para dominar su instrumento. "El "secreto" o afóubó de los batá es precisamente lo que se dice áña. Ilú áña o batá áña es el tambor cuando está "jurado". Aña es el "resguardo", "hechizo", "fetiche", o magia que los consagra. Es el "secreto" del dios Aña. "Para hacer un juego de batá que sea de "fundamento" o sea de "Aña", es necesario que lo consagre un sacerdote que tenga "Aña" y que pueda trasmitirla... Su creación está en las exclusivas facultades de los "olosaín" o sacerdotes de Osaín, el dios de los árboles y plantas o sea de sus fuerzas mágicas y medicinales". "Aña iggilú nitín chouó", le rezan al darle comida a los olú por la argolla del borde de su chachá. Lo cual parece ser corrupción criolla de Aña igguí ilú gui tichouón o sea traducido "Aña, del árbol tambor hizo que el habla fuese preciosa". Sinonimias: batá. battá, ilú batá. ilú áña, bata áña, Onibatá, onilú. "Cada áña o lú de los batá, tiene, además, un nombre especifico. El tambor más pequeño se denomina Kónkolo, Okónkolo, y generalmente también Omelé. El tambor mediano, o segundo por su tamaño, se conoce por Itótele u Omeló Enkó. El tambor batá de mayor tamaño se llama lyá. Iyá, madre, Jlú Iyá. es la madre de los tambores. "La palabra Itótele acaso provenga de las voces yoruba: "i", prefijo para denotar sustantivos de acción", "totó": completamente y "téle" sigue; quizás porque ese tambor es el que regularmente sigue al iyá, que es el que dirige. "Kónkolo"(el verdadero nombre) u Okonkolo como suele decirse, parece derivado de la palabra yoruba: Kónkoto "dios o juguete de los niños" aludiendo a que el Kónkolo es el más pequeño de los sacros batá, el bebé, o niño, así como iyá es el mayor o la madre. El vocablo Kónkolo más probablemente ha debido ser formado por "kon", cantar con repetición de la raíz en sentido reiterativo, y lo que, lo mismo que lu, significa "percutir un tambor o sonar un instrumento musical". "A veces los tambores flaquean, se advierte en su toque el cansancio; entonces algunos de los oyentes les grita ¡Omelé! para que todos aquellos reanimen sus energías. En yoruba omé lé puede significar ¡Muchachos, fuerte!..." La voz omelé pudiera provenir de omo "niño" y le "fuerte", "sobre los demás". El Kon kolo u omelé es en efecto el más pequeño de los batá, o sea el "niño" y también el es el que da en su cuero pequeño la nota más alta de los batá". "Las membranas de los batás son de piel de cabro o de venado". Cada tambor tiene dos bocas (enú) tapadas con cuero (auó). "Específicamente, el auó grande se denomina enú, que en yoruba quiere decir "boca"...; y el auó pequeño se llama chachá. voz onomatopéyica que en el vernáculo criollo se traduce libremente por "culata". Chachá no es sinónimo de cuero o membrana de ilú. "En la orquesta de batá, el iyá ocupa el centro, el omelé se pone invariablemente al lado derecho del iyá y el itótele a su costado izquierdo, aun cuando el Kpuátaki sea zurdo y toque el chachá con la derecha". Los batá jamás se tañen después de puesto el sol. Lo dice un canto lucumí: "Orú dié aña ko ofé soró" (Noche, poco aña, no quiere hablar)... "Estos adornos de chales y pañuelos en los batá se denominan alá". "Además de los alá comunes, los batá áña son vestidos excepcionalmente con un indumento litúrgico especial, que en Cuba se denomina banté y en la tierra yoruba ibanté. Ibanté quiere decir "delantal". (El ibanté salalá lo usaban los reyes o los sacerdotes en posición delantera). "Por la manipulación del oráculo éste designa el nombre que debe llevar el trío de batá, según el "camino" o el Odun que salga cuando las piezas de la adivinación caigan al azar. He aquí algunos de los nombres sagrados que tienen los batá de algunos famosos tamboreros de La Habana y su comarca: Aña Iguilú (algo así como "tambores de madera embrujada")...Añabi (hijo de Aña) es nombre de los batá... (de) Aguía batá. Otros títulos de batá son Akobí Aña ("El primer hijo del tambor") y Aiguobí (hijo de la música o de la bulla). Recientemente, a un trío de batá se le bautizó con el nombre encomiástico de Alayé, que en yoruba quiere decir "Amo del Mundo". Hay batá judíos y también tienen nombre. Uno de éstos se llama Iraguó Méta ("Tres estrellas"). Otro, bastante imperfecto, Lulú Yonkóri ("Toque y canto"). Ko bo ko guá ("no para el culto, no vengas"). Otro muy insultante, se dice Oró tin Ochú Kuá bi oré. lo cual parece significar "!Engaño! Te hicieron en luna nueva, nacido por un regalo o misericordia". Y a otro se le puso un título más repugnante... Olomí Yobó, "Flujo o menstruo de la vulva". Los tambores al ser "jurados" con jerarquía sacerdotal, adquieren un nombre como los olochas y los babalaos. Okilákpa, Brazo Fuerte. Omó Ológun, Hijo del Amo de la Magia. E Meta Lókan, Tres en uno. Obanilú, Rey del tambor. Eruáña, Esclavo de Aña. Otobike, Omó gugú, Yóboyobo, etc. El órú de los batá es una especie de himnario musical que se tañe en honor de los orichas; previamente en el "cuarto", sagrario o igbódu; primero sin cantos y sólo a golpes de tambor, y después con el acompañamiento del canturreo litúrgico y de los bailes en el ilé aránla. Los toques especiales son muchos y cada uno tiene su nombre. Aluyá, el dedicado a Changó y a Oyá, muy vivo y que se baila "sacando el pie". Báyuba, también de Changó y Oyá, lento, complicado y "muy movido de cintura". Kankán, de Changó con muchos movimientos de pies como "puntapiés a una piedra". Tuitui, asimismo para Changó con baile cinturero. Aláro, en salutación a Yemayá. Apkuápkuá, una especie de zapateo para la misma diosa. Chenché Kururú, en homenaje a la diosa Ochún. Ayálikú, ritmación y tonos tristes y funerarios, inspiración de Oyá, diosa de la muerte. Aggueré, toque estrepitoso, un frenesí percusivo en el chachá, dedicado a Ochosí. Y así muchos más, innumerables.
