  • 6 ἐρεσχηλέω

    Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: `joke, tease, worry' (Ion.-Att.) with ἐρεσχηλία, - χελία (Pap., EM 371, 1, Suid.).
Other forms: (v. l. - χελέω); only present
Derivatives: ἐρίσχηλος λοίδορος (EM, Parth. Fr. 18; after ἔρις).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: Like βλασφημέω (s. v.) a. o. prob. from a nominal 1. member and a verbal 2. member, further unclear. Wackernagel KZ 33, 57 = Kl. Schr. 1, 736 sees in ἐρεσ- a neutral stem (synonymous with ἔρις), which he finds also in ἐπήρεια; with the 2. member he compares with χηλεύειν ῥάπτειν, πλέκειν H.; ἐρεσ-χηλεῖν then `start a feud'. Furnée holds ε\/η for Pre-Greek; note also ἐρι-, which can be analogical.
