Loc. lat. que significa literalmente 'horror al vacío'. Se emplea, en el campo del arte, para referirse a la tendencia a llenar todos los espacios de elementos decorativos. Es locución masculina: "El genio local se manifiesta en los diseños ornamentales, con un hórror vacui que se exacerbará en el barroco" ( Geo [Esp.] 6.95). Su uso se ha extendido figuradamente a otros ámbitos: "Una especie de hórror vacui, que es necesario llenar aunque sea con compañía indiferente y con palabras descoloridas" (Donoso Casa [Chile 1978]). [RAE: Diccionario panhispánico de dudas. Madrid: Santillana, 2005, p. 347]◘ La idea viene de Aristóteles, quien en el libro IV de su Física aporta argumentos contra el vacío. Su argumentación iba dirigida contra los atomistas, discípulos de Demócrito, que postulaba que la naturaleza estaba formada por átomos y vacío. La teoría contra el vacío de los atomistas, fue defendida por los estoicos y llegó hasta la Edad Media. La filosofía escolástica medieval creía que la naturaleza tiene horror al espacio vacío y lo intenta siempre llenar de contenido. Por eso los espacios vacíos se llenan de gases y líquidos. La opinión de que la naturaleza aborrece el vacío fue discutida en la siglo XVII, siendo Pascal uno de los mayores críticos de esta teoría. -
