1 Canvas
There are many fabrics termed canvas. The principal kinds are: - Cloths for embroidering, which are very strong, plain weave, from two, three or fourfold yarns, and a more or less open texture. Java Canvas is a fabric made from hard twist, yarns (loth warp and weft) and a mock leno weave. A Canvas which is shipped grey or finished, and made from coarse yams, hard twist, about 8's warp, 12's weft, 40-ends, 34 picks, in widths 26-in. to 32-m in plain weave. Sail Canvas is a stout built cloth from two-fold linen warp and coarse cotton weft. A Dress Canvas, woven from linen warp and cotton weft, such as 60's linen and 32's cotton, 74 ends and 76 picks per inch, 39 in wide, dyed in many colours Canvas Duck is made from coarse tow yarns, low reeds and picks, and in many qualities. 2 Canvas Cloth
A Bradford made fabric for dress purposes. All botany yarns are used, generally three fold warp and three fold or four fold weft, about 20 to 24 ends and picks per inch, which, in the plain weave, gives an open character to the cloth. An example of the cloth is made 20 X 20 per inch, 3/30's warp, 4/46's weft, botany yarns. Canvas is mentioned in 1611, as "striped canvas for doublets." -
3 Canvas (Artists')
Two kinds of fabric are prepared for artists' use; the best is called Ticking. It is primed with a ground of neutral grey or with other colours. They are kept stretched on frames ready for use. The principal sizes are known as: Kit-cat, 28-in. X 36-in., for portraits; Three-quarters, 25-in. X 30-in., Half-length, 40-in. X 50-in., Bishop's half length, 45-in. X 56-in., Bishop's length, 58 in. X 94-in. -

10 Mosaic Canvas
Very fine canvas used for embroidery work. The term covers all very fine canvas of silk, flax or cotton threads. -
11 Navy Canvas
The flax canvas fabric made specially for His Majesty's Navy. There are eight classified numbers in 24-in. and must be made from the best long British, Irish, Riga or Reval flaxes, or from the best long white Dutch, Flemish or Friesland flax. The Royal Navy canvas is made from 25-in. to 28-in. wide and is required to pass a breaking test. -
12 Congress Canvas
A plain weave canvas used in the United States of America for embroidery work. It is strong and open and made of thick doubled yarns either cotton or wool. -
13 Dardanelles Canvas

14 Flat Canvas
A term denoting the cotton canvas cloth used as a ground for embroidery. It is heavily calendered to give a flat surface upon which the design is sketched. -
15 Leviathan Canvas
A very coarse and open canvas cloth, made for embroidery work. The threads are in pairs with open spaces between to allow the thick wool to pass between. The yarns are two or more fold and very hard twisted. About 10 ends and picks per inch. -
16 Moskowa Canvas
A variety of ecru-coloured canvas for embroidery work. Woven in fancy designs with line stripes of gold and silver and black and blue threads in the ground. -
17 Net Canvas
An open weave canvas, made of cotton or flax, dyed black or bleached and heavily stiffened. Used for embroidery. -
18 Prelate Canvas
A canvas made in France from jute yarns used for sailcloth, tents, or garden chairs. The tent cloth is treated with tar and the chair fabric either proofed or left in the loom state. -
19 Berlin Canvas
A matting fabric made from cotton for embroidery purposes. It is woven from coarse round yarns, weaving two ends as one and 2-picks in a shed, giving tiny squares as open spaces for the wool yarn with which it is embroidered. The original fabric (about 1820) was made of silk union yarns in white, black, claret and primrose colours. The threads had a strong cotton core with silk wound round it. -
20 Astoli Canvas
A plain cloth manufactured under a patent to make it waterproof without using rubber. Usually 56-7-in. wide and principally used for motor car tops. Of Irish origin.
