A general term for mats and other textile fabrics, made by the natives in Africa. Some are made of grass by plaiting, but are of little value, others are of long coloured strips of cotton cloth, blues and reds, about an inch wide stitched together. -

A cotton market term used to denote deterioration in the value of the bales owing to their getting damp, stained, or dirty during their passage from the ginnery to the shipping port. The bales may have been left on muddy ground, uncovered and exposed to the weather as on railway sidings, etc. All this damaged cotton has to be picked off, resulting in loss of cotton as well as time; the cotton thus picked off is known as " pickings." -
