עֲגַןch. sam(עגן left lonely), to press, tie; to seclude, imprison. Targ. Is. 24:22 וִיעַגְנוּנוּןוכ׳ and they shall press them into the prison house (ed. Lag. ויגונונון, ed. Ven. ויגינונון, contr. of ויַעְגִּינוּ׳ Af. (?); Ar. ויִעַגְּנוּן Ithpa.; h. text סְגְּרוּ).Part. pass. עָגִין; pl. עֲגִינִין. Ib. 42:7. Ib. 22, v. next w. Ib. 49:9. Pa. עַגֵּן to make lonely, desert (a wife). Gitt.26b ומְעַגַּן ומותיב לה he might desert her. Ithpa. אִתְעַגֵּן, אִיעַגֵּן to be secluded, tied up; (of a woman) to be prevented from marrying, be an עֲגוּנָה. B. Mets.19a משום דלא תִתְעַגֵּן ותתיב הוא Ms. M. (ed. תעגין, corr. acc.) it was done in order that she might not remain a widow in life.
