מוּמָרm. (part. Hof. of מוּר) 1) exchanged, v. מוּר. 2) converted, apostate, esp. muwmar, an open opponent of Jewish law, non-conformist. (Our w. interchanges with מְשוּמָּד in eds. a. mss. Ḥull.4b אפי׳ ישראל מ׳ even a non-observant Israelite; Tosef. ib. I, 1 משומד ed. Zuck. (Var. מ׳). Ḥull. l. c. מ׳ לערלות opposed to circumcision; מ׳ לאותו דבר opposed to this one practice (of slaughtering according to ritual); ib. הוי מ׳ לכל התורה כולה is considered as a rebel against the entire Law; ib. מ׳ לע״א accused of idolatry. Ib. 5a המ׳ ומנסךוכ׳, expl. ib. מ׳ לנסךוכ׳ one accused of idolatrous libation Erub.69a, v. גִּילּוּי. Ab. Zar.26b לתיאבון מ׳ להכעיסוכ׳ if eating unslaughtered flesh ( נבילות) to gratify his appetite, he is called a mumar; if he does it in a spirit of defiance, he is called a min (heretic). Ib.
