ותרגנו

מִתְלַהֵםm., pl. מִתְלַהֲמִים (b. h.; להם, cmp. לָחַם) professing attachment, flatterers, hypocritical sympathizers. Sifré Num. 85 (ref. to Num. 11:1 (read:) אין כמתאוננים אלא כמ׳ וכן הוא אומר ותרגנווכ׳ kmithonnim means like those who pretend to sympathize (with their neighbors troubles, v. אוֹנָן), and even so we read (Deut. 1:27) vatteragnu מהו ותרגנו שהיו מדברים כמ׳וכ׳ what does vatteragnu mean? They were speaking like sympathizers (with ref. to Prov. 26:22); Yalk. Num. 732. Sifré Deut. 24 (ref. to Deut. l. c.) מלמד שהיו יושבים … ואומרים דברים כמ׳ ומתרגנים כמ׳שנ׳וכ׳ which intimates that they sat in their tents and spoke words like sympathizers and formed crowds like sympathizers, as we read (Prov. l. c.) ; Yalk. ib. 805. Ib. בוכין ומבכין כמ׳ (or כמתלהם, sing.; not כמת להם) weeping and moving to tears like sympathizers.

Nidd.16b (a variant to הנרגל, v. רָגַל) שר הנִרְגָּן (בבית המשתאות) a magistrate (or scholar) that is surrounded by a crowd (whom he incites to riot) in drinking houses. Pi. רִגֵּן to heap, cast, (with דברים, cmp. טוּחַ) to speak rebelliously, reproach. Gen. R. s. 20, beg. (ref. to נרגן, Prov. 16:28) זה הנחש … שר׳ ד׳וכ׳ that is the serpent … that spoke rebelliously against his Creator; Yalk. Prov. 956. Num. R. s. 16 (ref. to Prov. 18:8 נרגן, a. Deut. 1:27 ותרגנו) דברים שרִגְּניּ אחרוכ׳ (or שרָגְנוּ) the words which they cast up behind the Lord, caused them great distress; Tanḥ. Shlaḥ 11; Yalk. Num. 743. Hithpa. הִתְרַגֵּן to gather crowds around ones self. Sifré Deut. 24 ומִתְרַגְּנִים, v. מִתְלַהֵם.

Deut. 1:22 ויִתְרְגָנוּן (read: וִיתַרְגְּניּן; h. text ויחפרו, V. Sot.34b); Targ. Y. I ib. 24 ותִרְגִּנּוּ ed Vien. (read: ותַרְגִּנּוּ; oth. ed. ותְרַגְנוּ; h. text וירגלו).
