"Почему же вы не поставили меня об этом в известность?" (Войнович 3). "I'm asking you if the question of improvement of your housing conditions had already been considered at a general assembly?" "Yes," Sergei Sergeevich forces out. "Why didn't you make me aware of this?" (3a).
         ♦ Тут номенклатурная логика: подчинённому (мне) не надо знать всего, что знает начальник (он [Твардовский]). И подчинённый (я) не мог же написать такого, о чём не поставлен в известность начальник (он) (Солженицын 2). That is the logic of the officeholding hierarchy: a subordinate (I) must not know all his superior (Tvardovsky) knows. And the subordinate (I) could not have written anything of which his superior (Tvardovsky) had not been notified (2a).
         ♦ "...О плане этом вы будете в своё время поставлены мною в известность..." (Салтыков-Щедрин 2). "I shall acquaint you with the plan in good time..." (2a).

В конце концов я узнал, что Иванько Сергей Сергеевич... родственник бывшего председателя КГБ Семичастного... (Войнович 3). I was spared the necessity of gathering information on Ivanko-reports on him rained down on me....In the end I learned that Ivanko, Sergei Sergeevich...was a relative of the former director of the KGB, Semichastny...          ♦ В ранней молодости я стыдился своих ушей. Теперь я к ним привык. В конце концов они не очень мешали мне в жизни (Войнович 5). Though I was ashamed of my ears in my early youth, now I've grown used to them. In the final analysis they haven't been that much of a hindrance to me in this life (5a).
    2. used to add emotional emphasis to some statement, express dissatisfaction, impatience etc:
    - after all.
         ♦ "У меня изменилось мнение. Могло же оно измениться? Мы не догматики, в конце концов!" (Ерофеев 3). "I've changed my mind. Can't one change one's mind? We're not dogmatists, after all!" (3a).
