Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 183 and 226f.), f. ἐγγυήτρια (pap.); ἐγγυητή `betrothed' (Att.); ἐγγυητικός `belonging to the surity' (Heph. Astr.); postverbal ἔγγυος m. `guarantor' (Thgn., inscr.), also adj. `guaranteed' (Them.; s. below). - Beside ἐγγυάω also ἐγγυεύω (Delph.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] {403] *gou- `hand'Etymology: Probably ἐγγύη and ἐγγυάω contain the prep. ἐν and a lost word for `hand', preserved in Av. gava `both hands' and also in ὑπό-γυ(ι)ος `imminent, sudden', prop. `under hands'? (Ion. Att.). Further in Greek γύαλον, γύης, γυῖα (s. vv.), in other languages e. g. Lith. gáunu `get, obtain'; s. Pok. 403f., Fraenkel Lit. et.
