ὑάκινθος, ὁ, auch ἡ, 1) die Hyacinthe, eine Blume, die aus dem Blute des getödteten Hyakinthos, nach Andern aus dem des Telamoniden Aias entsprossen sein soll; man wollte auf ihren Blättern die Anfangsbuchstaben ΥΑ oder ΑΙ erkennen; dah. γραπτὰ ὑάκινϑος, Theocr. 10, 28; αἰαστή, Nic. bei Ath. XV, 683; auch von ΑΙ als Klageruf, πολύϑρηνος, Th. 9021 als masc. kommt die Blume zuerst vor Il. 14, 348, dann h. Cer. 7. 426; scheint aber einen größern Umfang gehabt und das Geschlecht der Iris und den Rittersporn umfaßt zu haben; schwarz ist sie Theocr. 10, 28 u. Virg. Ecl. 2, 18; dah. Od. 6, 231. 23, 158 Einige den Vergleich ὑακινϑίνῳ ἄνϑει ὁμοίας auf die Schwärze der Haare beziehen, Eust. ὅ ἐστι μελαίνας κατὰ τὸν ὑάκινϑον τὸ ἄνϑος (vgl. Theocr. 10, 28); da aber der Vergleich auf das voranstehende κὰδ δὲ κάρητος οὔλας ἧκε κόμας geht, und Odysseus gewöhnlich mit starken Locken abgebildet ist – solche dicke Locken galten als Zeichen der Schlauheit –, so ist es wahrscheinlicher, daß nur die Lockenfülle des dichten Haares geschildert werden soll, wofür grade die kraus in einander gerollten Blüthen der Hyacinthe kein unpassendes Bild geben; oder, da diese unsere Hyacinthe eine von der alten Hyacinthe ganz verschiedene Blume sein soll, vgl. Voß Virg. Ecl. 2, 18. 50. 3, 106. 10, 39 Schweigh. Ath. XV, 683 e, die blaue Schwertlilie, iris foetidissima Linn.? Nach Andern ist es delphium Aiacis, Gartenrittersporn. – Purpurfarben, dunkel- oder braunroth ist die Hyacinthe bei Mel. 105 (V, 147); Euphor. 38 p. 89 Mein.; vgl. Ovid. Metam. 10, 211; rostfarbig, auch himmelblau und schneeweiß bei Colum., was auf Rittersporn, wie auf unsere Hyacinthe paßt. – Nach Hom. scheint die Blume häufiger fem. gewesen zu sein. – 2) ἡ ὑάκινϑος, der Edelstein Hyacinth, von der Farbe der Hyacinthblume, vielleicht unser Sapphir, Sp., wie Heliod. 2, 11.
