(s. νωδός) and ὄθομαι "who cares for nothing" with formation of the second member after the σ-, resp. ρο-stems cf. Schwyzer 513 and 483). After Müller-Graupa PhW 63,94 to ὠθέω ("who does not let him pushed from his place); equally probable. -- Not with Johansson and Brugmann (s. Bq) to Skt. ādhrá- `weak, poor' (s. WP. 1, 57 n. 1 and Mayrhofer s.v.), also not with Mayrhofer Arch. Linguist. 2, 137 to Pāli dandha- `slow' (phonetically very difficult). Forssman, FS XXX defends connection with Skt. ādhra-.
