Grammatical information: adv. and prep.Meaning: `until' (Θ 508).Other forms: beside μέσφι (Aret.); μέστα (Cret. IIa, Cyren.), μεττ'ἐς (Gortyn), μέστε (Arc.), μεσποδι, μες (Thess.); cf. Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 137.Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: Beginning as in μέχρι (s. v.; also μετά ?), after it also -ι in μέσφι. Auslaut. - φα is isolated; τόφρα, by Schwyzer 630 n. 1 asking supposed as example, differs strongly. With μέστε agrees ἔστε (s.v.); μεσποδι contains pob. * pod-i Garcia Ramón (RPh. LXXIV92000)275); μες, only in μες τᾶς πέμπτας, can stand haplologically for μέστε, - τα. Details remain unclear, as usually with these fixed words; cf. 15 μέχρι
Grammatical information: adv. a. prep.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [702] *me-ǵh(s)-ri `until'Etymology: Identical with Arm. merj `near, by' (from where merjenam `approach' from * merji-anam); IE *méǵhri. Further combinations ( μετά, μέσφα?; s. v.) are hypothetical. After Adontz Mél. Boisacq 1, 10 f. from μέ-χρ-ι to χείρ `hand' (cf. ἐγγύς); basis then *méǵhsr-i. Diff., certainly not better, Hahn Lang. 18, 83ff. (to IE * sem- in εἷς etc.; cf. on μετά). 16 πρόσφατος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `undecomposed', of a corpse (Ω 757 [ ἐρσήεις καὶ π.], Hdt.), `fresh', of plants, victuals, water a.o. (Hp., Arist., hell.), metaph. `fresh' = `happened lately, recently, immediately following, recens', of actions, emotions etc. (A. in lyr., Lys., D., Arist.).Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: Acc. to Phot. prop. = νεωστὶ ἀνῃρημένος, an interpretation, which seems to give the best solution. So to πεφ-νεῖν, φόνος, θείνω with the same 2. member as in the compounds Άρηΐ-, ἀρεί-φατος, μυλή-φατος, ὀδυνή-φατος; the remarkable development of meaning was possible as the second member became unclear (also in ἀρείφατος: also `martial'). The first element cannot be preverbal (as if from *προσ-θείνω), but has a similar function as in the nominal πρόσ-οικος, πρόσ-γειος etc.; prop. "close to the dead (killing), closely following" with univerbating το-suffix. -- Other hypotheses (to be rejected) in Bq w. lit.; to be rejected also Schwyzer 503 Zus. 2 (asking: "to *προσφα, cf. μέσφα?").Page in Frisk: 2,601-602Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πρόσφατος

17 σάφα
Grammatical information: Adv.Meaning: `surely, certainly, definitely', esp. with οῖ᾽δα, also w. other verbs of ḳnowing and saying (Il.).Derivatives: Besides σαφής adj. `sure, definite, apparent, clear, evident' (Pi., A.; σαφές h. Merc.; s. bel.) with adv. σαφέως, σαφῶς `id.' (h. Cer.). Expressive enlargement σαφ-ηνής, Dor. -ᾱνής, adv. - ηνέως (Pi., trag.; adv. also Hdt.), after ἀπ-, προσ-ηνής a. o. (to be rejected Prellwitz Glotta 19, 95ff.), with σαφήν-εια f. `clarity, clearness' (Att. since A., Alcmaion; opposite ἀσάφεια from ἀ-σαφής), - ίζω `to make clear, to explain' (IA.) with - ισμός, - ιστικός (late). -- Quite doubtful σαφήτωρ μάντις ἀληθής, μηνυτής, ἑρμηνευτής H., as if from *σαφέω ( διασαφέω since E.); certainly only arisen from a v. l. Ι 404 (for ἀφήτωρ).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]; PGX [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Of the above words the earliest attested adv. σάφα (on the formation Schwyzer 622) seems to be the oldest; from this σαφέως (as τάχα: ταχέως), the ntr. σαφές ( σαφες δ' οὑκ οῖ᾽δα h. Merc. 208) with σαφέστερον, and to this at last σαφής (Leumann Hom. Wörter 112 n. 77). -- Unexplained. Often analysed as in σα-φής with the 2. member of φάος, φαίνω; before this σα- as strengthening element, and this either with Prellwitz BB 22, 81 ff. to σάος (* tuh₂-; s. σῶς and τύλη) or with Brugmann IF 39, 114ff. to τίς (* kʷih₂-); prop. exclamation; cf. Σίσυφος and σοφός. Against this after Grošelj Živa Ant. 1, 127 to Ion. σάω `sieve' (s. διαττάω and σήθω), so prop. *'sieved'; - φα as in μέσφα. Older proposals in Bq and W.-Hofmann s. faber, sapiō and tabula. -- Estensively on σάφα Luther "Wahrheit" u. "Lüge" 61 ff.; s. also Frisk GHÅ 41 (1935): 3, 20 (Kl. Schr. [Göteborg 1966] 18). -- Furnée suggests several connections, which are not evident (index s.v.); he concludes to Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,684Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σάφα
