Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: surn. of Apollon (Δ 101, 119).Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: As for Λύκειος (A.) also for Λυκη-γενής connection with wolf, with the Lycians, earlier also with `light' (cf. on λύχνος) have been attempted. On the explanations s. Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 536ff.; (he prefers `wolf-god' ( = λυκο-κτόνος, as protector of the herds) and takes Λυκηγενής `born in Lycia' as a reinterpretation of Λύκειος as Λύκιος `the Lycian'. There is little doubt that it means `born in Lycia', Beekes JANER 3(2003) 15f.
