(Chantraine Formation 367, Schwyzer 511); usu. connected with κύαρ (against this Chantraine l.c., but accepted again in DELG); cf. on κύαμος. Wrong Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73, 529 (Skt. kávandha-'barrel)'. Lat. LW [loanword] cyathus (Plaut.). - Szemerényi, Gnomon 43 (1971) compares Ugar. qb`t, Hebr. qubba`at `cup'. Clearly a Pre-Greek word (cf. DELG); Fur. 237 compares κόβαθος `a vessel', and κύβεθρον `beehive'(?).
