In the meaning `kettle' it could be a metaphor of `partridge', Hemmerdinger Glotta 48 (1970) 53. From Greek Lat. cac(c)abus, dimin. cac(c)abulus (= κακουβαλουμ in Ps.-Dsc.; Andre Latomus 14, 518). Cf.
