Akkad. kukubu; Lewy Glotta 16, 137 and Grimme Glotta 14, 19); rejected by E. Masson, Emprunts sémit. 83-83, but again defended by Szemerényi IF 73 (1968) 194f. In the meaning `kettle' it could be a metaphor of `partridge', Hemmerdinger Glotta 48 (1970) 53. From Greek Lat. cac(c)abus, dimin. cac(c)abulus (= κακουβαλουμ in Ps.-Dsc.; Andre Latomus 14, 518).
