Trag.).Etymology: Formation like ἐγχείη (: ἔγχος) a. o.; so \< *θυεσ-ίᾱ as ία-deriv. from θύος `burnt sacrifice' (Solmsen Wortf. 250 n.); cf. the concrete words in - ία, esp. names of vases like ὑδρία, ἀντλία, in Scheller Oxytonierung 48ff. From the meaning `vase for pounding the incense' developed through generalization resp. specialization `mortar' and `oil-press' (the development of the meaning is rather strange). - θυεῖον like ἀγγεῖον. - The pestle, θυέσ-της (s.
