One compares since Fick 1, 466 a word for `valley etc.', which is found in Germanic, Slavic, and Celtic, e. g. Goth. dal(s) m. or n. `φάραγξ, βόθυνος', OWNo. dalr `valley, arch', OCS dolъ `βάραθρον, λάκκος', Russ. dol `valley, lower part', Welsh dol f. `valley'. Prop. meaning then *`bowing, bending', from where `vault(ing)', resp. `hollow' (see Huisman KZ 71, 103); improbable. Often connected with θάλαμος, e. g. E. Maaß RhM 77, 1ff.; against this Wahrmann Glotta 19, 213. - Cf.
