1 βάσσος
Grammatical information: n.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Schwyzer RhM 81, 199f. (who rejects the accentuation βᾶσσος) proposes *βάθ-σος (on the suffix Schwyzer 513). Beside βῆσσα we have Dor. βᾶσσα, so the word could be a variant of βῆσσα if this word is Pre-Greek.. Unclear DELG. From this word Lat. bassus `lowly' Kretschmer Glotta 22, 258f.; quite uncertain. - S. βῆσσα und βαθύς.Page in Frisk: 1,224-225Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βάσσος

8 βαθύς
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `deep, high', met. `rich' etc. (Il.).Derivatives: Comp. and sup. βαθύτερος, - τατος, rarely βάθιον, βάσσον, βάθιστος (Seiler Steigerungsformen 52). Factitive verb βαθύνω (Il.), intr. `go down, sink' (Ph.). On Βαθύλος, - υλλος s. Leumann Glotta 32, 218. - Beside βένθος`depth' (Il.); βάθος `id.' Ion.-Att.Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably]Etymology: Belongs to βένθος, but there are no further etym. connections; only -en-: -n̥- can be reconstructed, which seems IE. βένθος not analogical (after πένθος!, Schwyzer RhM 81, 201, Risch 125f.; rejected by Seiler l. c.). Not to βάπτω (and βόθρος) with Szemerényi, Glotta 38 (1960) 211-216. So not to βῆσσα, βάσσος, βυθός.Page in Frisk: 1,208Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βαθύς

9 βασσάρα
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `fox' (Sch. Lyk. 771), `dress of bacchante's' (EM, AB, H.) from the skin of a fox; `bacchante' (Sch. Lyk. 771, EM), `impudent woman' (Lyk., EM).Derivatives: βασσάριον `fox' (Hdt. 4, 192; Libyan), βασσαρεύς name of Dionysos (Hor.), βάσσαρος = βάκχος (Orph.); denom. ἀνα-βασσαρέω `break forth in Bacchic frenzy' (Anacr.).Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Egypt.Etymology: Herodotus calls the word Libyan. This seems confirmed by the etymology with Egypt. wasar, Copt. bašor (Szemerényi, Gnomon 43 (1971) 660, without reference). Szemerényi further wants to maintain the connection with Hitt. wassuwar `clothing' for the dress; rejected by Neumann, Weiterleben (1961) 19, I think rightly so. Fur. 257 n. 36 notes that βάσσος = βασσάρα (EM) and that - αρ(ος) is a frequent Pre-Gr. suffix.Page in Frisk: 1,224Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βασσάρα
