    En swap er en selvstændig finansiel transaktion, der kan benyttes til omlægning af rente- og valutabasis for såvel aktiver som passiver.
    1) Renteswap
    Ved en renteswap forstås en transaktion, hvorved to parter indgår en aftale om at udveksle betalinger i den samme valuta. Betalingen udregnes som rentebetalinger af samme beregningsmæssige hovedstol, men på grundlag af forskellige renteberegningsprincipper. Renteswaps kan laves mellem fast og variabel rente eller mellem to variable renteindeks.
    2) Valutaswap
    En valutaswap er i princippet en terminshandel, hvor den ene part køber valuta spot mod en anden valuta, men samtidig forpligter sig til at aflevere den købte valuta og modtage den solgte valuta på et givet tidspunkt i fremtiden, normalt til den samme kurs. Ved aftalens indgåelse kan hovedstolene byttes, mens en sådan udveksling altid finder sted ved aftalens afslutning. Forskellen mellem en valutaswap og en valutaterminskontrakt er især den, at ved en terminskontrakt omregnes eventuelle renteforskelle til et tillæg/fradrag, mens disse ved en valutaswap udlignes løbende gennem rentebetalinger i de to involverede valutaer. En valutaswap indebærer således et bytte af betalingsstrømme svarende til rentebetalinger beregnet på grundlag af de udvekslede valutabeløb.
