2 Swiss Lace
A Swiss machine-made embroidered net in imitation of Brussels. Also known as Broderie Anglaise. Made at Neufchatel of fine cotton thread. Nottingham manufacturers produce imitations in coarser cotton for use as curtains. -
3 Swiss Applique
A very light plain muslin fabric made from yarns about 100's to 120's and 80 ends and 80 picks per inch and finer. The cloth is ornamented by small spots in relief fixed on the face. The spots consist of cotton fibres or a paste and are fixed so securely that the cloth might tear in removing a spot. -
4 Swiss Brussels
Curtains with patterns outlined in chain stitch by the tambour machine (see Curtain Laces) -
5 Swiss Cambric
A plain cotton cloth 32-in. to 36-in. wide woven from good quality cotton yarns. It is embroidered or ornamented by lappet or swivel figuring. The finish is stiff and with no lustre. It is a fine muslin fabric and formerly was always white. -
6 Swiss Checks
Cotton cloth woven 33-in. wide, 68 ends and 62 picks per inch, 36's warp, 54's weft, from all grey yarns. Piece-bleached and dress finish. The warp is dented 2 ends in one dent, then one end in one dent three times. The weft plan is the same as the warp, giving a check effect. There are eight headings in a piece of 94 yards, each heading being 5 bar X 2 bar Turkey red yarn and 4 picks each. -
7 Swiss Embroidery
This method of adding ornament is done by hand or machine on the woven fabric. Light-weight muslins are usually the fabrics used. -
8 Swiss Mull
Very fine muslin, plain weave, made about 96 ends and 112 picks per inch, 90's warp, 110's weft, all cotton yarns. -
9 Swiss Muslin
Woven in Switzerland on hand looms, and ornamented with small spots or sprigs of many colours. In Scotland and Bolton a fine lappet cloth is made to imitate this fabric, and usually 50-in. by 60 yards split, 120 ends and 80 picks per inch, 80's warp, 60's weft, both Egyptian cotton with 3/40's lappet yarn. The figures are small. -
10 Swiss Net Curtains

11 Swiss Pongee
An imitation of the Japanese pongee made from mercerised cotton yarn, plain weave, about 80 ends and 76 picks per inch, 50's warp, 46's weft. -
12 Swiss bolt
■ Team tactical system developed by Switzerland in the 1930s in which all players move forward when on the attack but all fall back in defence when the opposing team counter-attacks, the forwards attempting to confront this counter-attack at the halfway line.► The bolt was introduced by the Austrian Karl Rappan who was player-manager of Servette Geneva in 1932 and later went on to become Swiss national coach.■ Spielsystem, bei dem alle Spieler gemeinsam zum Angriff übergehen und gemeinsam zur Verteidigung zurückfallen, wobei sich aber die vorderen Spieler nur bis zum Mittelfeld zurückziehen und die gegnerischen Angreifer beim Rückzug bekämpfen.► Der Schweizer Riegel wurde vom Wiener Trainer Karl Rappan erfunden, der die Schweizer Nationalmannschaft zwischen 1937 und 1963 mehrmals betreute. -
