    Quando si vuole dire che la linea telefonica non è disponibile non si usa l'aggettivo occupied, ma engaged (in inglese britannico) o busy (in inglese americano): The line is engaged, la linea è occupata (non The line is occupied). L'aggettivo occupied corrisponde a “occupato” in molti altri contesti: The toilet is occupied, il bagno è occupato; This seat is occupied, questo posto è occupato.

    Nota d'uso
    Il sostantivo lady, signora, esprime un senso di nobiltà o cortesia ed è un titolo: ad esempio, Lady Ponsonby, Lady Byron. Da solo, lady si usa come forma di cortesia: “Please, show this lady to her seat”, “Per favore, accompagni la signora al suo posto”; “Ladies and gentlemen…”, “Signori e signore…”. Woman, “donna”, è un termine più neutro.

    Nelle formule di cortesia, l'italiano “prego” non corrisponde sempre a un semplice please. In inglese infatti, spesso si usano alcune locuzioni più lunghe. Per fare entrare in casa qualcuno, ad esempio, il nostro “prego” corrisponde a please, come in. Per farsi precedere da un'altra persona, “prego” diventa after you. Quando si vuol far passare qualcuno avanti, “prego” corrisponde a go ahead. Davanti a un banchetto o simili, “prego” diventa help yourself, mentre per far accomodare una persona si dice Please, take (o have) a seat.
