Разговорное сокращение от слова Briton или Britisher, обычно употребляемое в значении обидного прозвища. Лозунг Brits out! (Британцы — вон!) можно увидеть на стенах в некоторых районах Северной Ирландии. В Австралии и Новой Зеландии наряду со словом Brit употребляется слово Pom, обозначающее британца. В самой Британии Brit используется редко, т. к. считается фамильярным:The average Brit has great difficulty understanding modern classical music. — Простой брит с трудом понимает современную классическую музыку.
