    SUBJECT AREA: Canals, Civil engineering
    [br]
    b. 1790 Whitesboro, New York, USA
    d. 1834 St Augustine, Florida, USA
    [br]
    American civil engineer.
    [br]
Between 1807 and 1816 White worked for his father. He fought in the War of 1812, and worked his way to Russia and back in a merchantman; in 1817–18 he went to England and walked over 2,000 miles (3,220 km) over canal sites. After 1818 he was Principal Assistant to Benjamin Wright on the construction of the Erie Canal until its completion in 1825; he was the only one involved in this project who had any knowledge of European canal construction. He was particularly noted for the design of canal locks and their equipment; one of his main contributions was the discovery of the lime rock in New York State which could be converted into concrete, and in 1820 he obtained a patent for a waterproof cement. He supervised the Glen Falls feeder construction, and he was Chief Engineer for the Delaware and Raritan Canal in New Jersey and the Lehigh and Union canals in Pennsylvania.

Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [597] *ḱeuk- `lighten, be white'
Etymology: Amply on κύκνος Thompson Birds s. v.; there also doubts on κυκνίας. Since Wood AmJPh 21, 179 as "the white one" (cf. on ἀλφός) connected with Skt. śócati `lighten, glow', šuk-rá- `light, hell, white'. (W.-)Hofmann s. cicōnia is rather (with Berneker and H. Petersson) inclined to assume an onomatopoet. origin (cf. Russ. kykъ `cry of a swan'). In κύδνος κύκνος H., after Specht Ursprung 121, 204, 229 old variation k: d, we have rather a hypercorrect writing after Lat. cycnus, cygnus (C-) = κύκνος, but also for Κύδνος (Schulze Kl. Schr. 700; cf. Schwyzer 208).

  • 11 End And End Figuring

Fabrics in which two kinds of warp ends are used, arranged in the cloth one end of each alternately. A well-known type had one end of fine cotton alternating with one end of coarser mercerised cotton. All the figuring is done by the mercerised ends, making a figured all-over effect possible at a lower cost than using a warp all mercerised. Modern applications of this principle are fabrics in which one end or cotton alternates with one of rayon. Another variation is an alternation of one end white, one end colour.
