•• Довольно коварное для переводчика слово, особенно до недавнего времени, которое обогатило русский язык словом виртуальный, что несколько облегчило жизнь «ленивым и нелюбопытным». Но это нововведение выручает далеко не всегда. Достаточно опасно и поверхностное знакомство со словарными эквивалентами – большинство словарей дают фактический, практический. Кстати, эти русские слова имеют разные контекстуальные оттенки значения: практический (практически) куда ближе к смыслу английского virtual. Из всех словарных определений мне кажется самым удачным то, которое предлагает Oxford American Dictionary: being so in effect though not in name or according to strict definition (близко к новомодному у нас как бы, хотя упаси меня Бог советовать переводчику часто прибегать к этому словосочетанию; наоборот, оно настолько засоряет современную русскую речь, что надо его всячески избегать, ведь требования к речи переводчика гораздо строже, чем к бытовому разговору). Слово virtually, употребление которого стало в последнее время особенно частым, можно в большинстве случаев безбоязненно переводить по существу или практически: President Clinton announced Friday a ten-year extension of the current moratorium on oil drilling off virtually all American ocean coastlines (New York Times). Some get paid virtually nothing – once the cost of housing and food has been deducted (New York Times).
