инфекционные субвирусные агенты, лишенные белковой оболочки, возбудители некоторых заболеваний (в первую очередь у растений). Известно 2 основных семейства В.: Avsunviroidae и Pospiviroidae. Геном В. представлен реплицирующейся одноцепочечной кольцевой РНК (от 247 до 401 н.), не кодирующей белки. В. способны автономно инфицировать клетки хозяина. Распространение В. происходит механическим путем (в т.ч. насекомыми), при вегетативном размножении и прививании растений, с помощью семян, спор и пыльцы. Считается, что В. представляют собой "сбежавшие интроны" — вырезанные в ходе сплайсинга пре-мРНК. В. заражают растения персиситентно, они вызывают системную инфекцию, т.е. мигрируют из места внедрения в другие части растений, переносятся механически или через клеточный сок, семена, пыльцу. Используются в качестве векторов в генной инженерии растений. Первый В. (В. веретеновидности клубней картофеля) обнаружен в 1971 г. Т. Дайнером.Толковый биотехнологический словарь.
