6 -also / too-
Nota d'usoAlso si pone prima del verbo, tranne nel caso di to be e dei verbi modali: He also speaks German, parla anche il tedesco; Did you also visit Dublin?, avete visitato anche Dublino?; Not only is he incompetent, he is also self-important, non soltanto è incompetente, ma anche presuntuoso.Too e as well (quest'ultimo non molto comune nell'inglese americano) sono più colloquiali di also e vengono generalmente posti alla fine della frase: He speaks German as well; Did you visit Dublin too?; Not only is he incompetent, he is self-important too. Too e as well sono molto più frequenti di also con gli imperativi e nelle risposte brevi: Help us as well!, aiutate anche noi!; «I am tired of his lies» «So am I (o più formale I am too, informale Me too)», «sono stufo delle sue bugie» «anch'io».Le frasi contenenti too e as well possono risultare ambigue: ad esempio, I like climbing too può voler dire 1) anche a me piace arrampicare oppure 2) mi piace anche arrampicare. In molti casi il contesto del discorso e, nel parlato, l'accento e l'intonazione sono sufficienti a eliminare l'ambiguità; tuttavia, se l'interpretazione corretta è la 1), nella lingua formale è possibile spostare too (ma non as well) subito dopo il soggetto: I, too, like climbing, anche a me piace arrampicare. -
7 -to exaggerate, to overdo o to go too far?-
Nota d'usoNon è sempre corretto tradurre il verbo “esagerare” con to exaggerate. Quest'ultimo, infatti, è usato soltanto quando si sovrastima qualcosa: I'm not exaggerating, there were a hundred people at the party, non sto esagerando, c'erano cento persone alla festa. Quando invece si vuole sottolineare che si è ecceduto in qualcosa si può usare semplicemente la locuzione too much o too many: I cooked too much rice, ho esagerato con il riso; I've made too many sandwiches, ho esagerato con i panini (non I've exaggerated with the sandwiches). In alternativa si può usare il verbo to overdo: I overdid it yesterday, I'm aching all over, ieri ho esagerato, mi fa male dappertutto. To go too far viene usato quando il comportamento di una persona è eccessivo e porta a conseguenze negative: I'm sorry I upset you, I went too far, mi dispiace di averti turbato, ho esagerato.English-Italian dictionary > -to exaggerate, to overdo o to go too far?-

20 -troppo-
Nota d'usotroppo si traduce con too davanti ad aggettivi e avverbi: Queste scarpe sono troppo grandi per me, these shoes are too big for me; La polizia arrivò troppo tardi, the police arrived too late.Davanti ai nomi, troppo si traduce con too much (al singolare) e too many (al plurale): Ho messo troppo burro nella torta, I've put too much butter in the cake (non I've put too butter in the cake); Hai fatto troppi errori, you've made too many mistakes (non you've made too mistakes).Per tradurre davvero troppo, fin troppo, decisamente troppo ecc. si pone davanti a too, a too much o a too many un modificatore come much, far, all, a lot (colloquiale); non si usa invece very: È davvero troppo vecchio per giocare a tennis, he's much too old to play tennis (non he's very too old…, he's too much old…); Alla festa è venuta decisamente troppa gente, far too many people came to the party; fin troppo spesso, all too often.
