γέλως, ωτος, ὁ, das Lachen, Gelächter, Ausdruck der Freude, des Spottes u. s. w., von Hom. an überall. Hom. acht Stellen, viermal nom. γέλως, viermal accus. γέλω: Odyss. 20, 8 ἀλλήλῃσι γέλω καὶ ἐυφροσύνην παρέχουσαι, v. l. γέλων u. γέλον; 20, 346 μνηστῆρσι δὲ Παλλὰς Ἀϑήνη ἄσβεστον γέλω ὦρσε, v. l. γέλον; 18, 350 γέλω δ' ἑτάροισιν ἔτευχεν, v. l. γέλων, γέλον; 18, 100 μνηστῆρες χεῖρας ἀνασχόμενοι γέλω ἔκϑανον, v. l. γέλῳ, dativ.; man hat auch das γέλω ohne Jota subscript. in dieser Stelle für den dativ. genommen, es ist aber accusat., vgl. ὁδὸν ἰέναι, ὁδὸν ἡγεῖσϑαι, νικᾶν τὰς γνώμας, Κορινϑίους ἀπεωσάμεϑαναυμαχίαν u. s. w.; die Alexandriner werden hier wohl eine Homerische oder Attische Enallage des Casus gesehn haben; nominat. γέλως Odyss. 8, 344 οὐδέ Ποσειδάωνα γέλως ἔχε, 343 ἐν δὲ γέλως ὦρτ' ἀϑανάτοισι ϑεοῖσιν, 326 und Iliad. 1, 599 ἄσβεστος δ' ἄρ' ἐνῶρτο γέλως μακάρεσσι ϑεοῖσιν. – In Prosa dat. γέλωτι, accus. γέλωτα; nach Moeris γέλων Att.
