До недавнего времени слово соответствовало английскому cottage, хотя в определении Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary есть много элементов, отсутствующих в значении русского "коттедж": 1. the dwelling of a rural laborer or small farmer. 2. a small usu. Frame one-family house. 3. a small detached dwelling unit at an institution. 4. a small house for vacation use. Однако "общий модуль" у русского и английского слова был уничтожен употреблением слова "коттедж" для обозначения строящихся с 1990-х годов жилищ, напоминающих скорее виллы и дворцы, чем скромные домики (кстати, слово "домик", наверное, наиболее подходящее соответствие для английского cottage, поэтому сейчас переводить русское коттедж как cottage нельзя.)small (detached) house, single family house (или "по-американски" home).Элитный котеджный поселок — elite/luxury housing project/development
