61 Décentralisation
regionalisation, decentralisation, devolution of power from the central government to regional and departmental authorities. France has a long legacy as a centralised state, dating back many centuries; the centralised structure of power has survived numerous regime changes in since the French Revolution. It was not until the election of a Socialist government in 1981 that any major steps were taken to reduce the importance of Paris. The first Loi de Décentralisation, passed in 1982, transferred certain powers to the regions, and since then further powers have been devolved, including responsibility for lycées (though not the recruitment of their teachers), regional public transport services, and the management of certain social services.Regions are now governed by elected conseils régionaux, under the leadership of a Président de région.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. 62 Département
County. Metropolitan France is divided administratively into 96 Departments. The concept of the Department, as a territorial subdivision, has existed since the seventeenth century. The original list of 89 departments, numbered alphanumericially from A to Z, was fixed in 1860. Since then, seven new departments have been added. Department 90, the Territoire de Belfort, was made from the French-speaking part of southern Alsace in 1871, and Departments 91 to 95, the departments of the Greater Paris area, added in 1964. Department 20, Corsica, was divided into two in 1976. There are also four overseas departments, known as DOM( Départements d'Outre-Mer). The capital town of a department is known as thePréfecture, and a Department is administered by an elected Conseil Général. Departments are grouped together to form larger units, known as régions.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. Agriculture Biologique > Département

63 Eglise Catholique
France is often described as a "Catholic" country; but this description is not technically true. Since 1905, there has been a strict separation of church and state in France, and France is officially a secular (laïc) republic. See laïcité. Nevertheless, Catholicism remains the main religion of France to this day. In 1999, slightly over half the French population claimed to be Catholic, though only about 12% of the population are churchgoers. There are 15 archbishoprics in the French Catholic church, plus the Catholic archdioceses of Strasbourg and Metz, which for historic reasons are directly dependent on the Vatican. Since the revolution, church buildings have belonged to the nation, and to this day their upkeep is the responsibility of local authorities. baccalauréat [bakalɔʀea]masculine nounb. (au Canada = licence) ≈ BA━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━The bac, as it is popularly known, is the school leaving examination all French « lycée » students take in their final year. Before beginning their baccalauréat studies, pupils choose a specialization known as a « série », represented by an initial letter: a bac with a scientific bias is known as a « bac S » (for « scientifique ») while an arts-oriented bac is referred to as a « bac L » (for « littéraire »), for example. When the word bac is followed by a plus sign and a number, this refers to the number of years of formal study completed since obtaining the baccalauréat qualification: « bac + 3 » refers to the « licence » or equivalent, « bac + 4 » to the « maîtrise » etc. These abbreviations are often used in job advertisements to indicate the level of qualification required.* * *known informally as the bac, is an examination sat in the final year of the lycée ( la terminale), so usually at age 17 or 18.
