Колебания уровня морской воды между краями бассейна или части бассейна с периодами, изменяющимися от нескольких минут до нескольких часов. Энергия, необходимая для возбуждения сейш, может поступать от сильных ветров и изменений атмосферного давления во время штормов, от приливов или сейсмических возмущений.
