  • 6 Spanish Trail

Any of a number of trade routes in the early days of the Southwest. Clark indicates that the term applied especially to two main roads, one leading from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Los Angeles, California, and the other going from Salt Lake City, Utah, to San Bernadino, California, via Cedar City (Utah) and Las Vegas (Nevada). "Old Spanish Trail" that winds through Tucson and the surrounding area is part of the Santa Fe—Los Angeles route. Such trails would have been known to cowboys, rustlers, and renegades in the Old West.

  • 7 guia

( guía [gía] < guiar 'to guide, lead,' a term common to all Western Romance languages; the initial consonant indicates that it is of Germanic origin, but no similar term exists in known Germanic lexicons. Corominas suggests it is from Gothic * widan 'to gather together,' since the original meaning in Romance was 'to escort someone and guarantee his safety')
Bentley: 1844. Referenced by Watts as a custom pass or manifest. Blevins indicates it was a written permit to allow American merchandise into Mexico, especially during the time of the Santa Fe Trail. The DRAE provides a similar definition. Cobos references it as an invoice or a bill of lading (according to the 6ED, it is an official receipt given by the master of a merchant vessel to the person shipping the goods; the document makes the master of the vessel responsible for the safe arrival of the goods; it may be used as legal proof of ownership of goods, and may be deposited with a creditor as security for a loan).

  • 8 wagh!

gua! [gwá] or ¡ hua! [wá], of uncertain origin)
Blevins suggests that this expression of assent or admiration comes from the Spanish ¡ gua!, meaning "gracious!". He indicates that ¡ gua! was first borrowed by drivers on the Santa Fe Trail, where it meant "get along." The DRAE references ¡ gua! as an interjection used in Bolivia, Columbia, Peru, and Venezuela to express fear or admiration. See also hua!

  • 10 llano estacado

(Sp. model spelled same [jáno] [see above] plus [estakáSdo], nominalized perfective participle of estacar 'to enclose or fence in' < estaca 'stake,' perhaps of Germanic origin [such as < Gothic *stakka]; in this case, estacado should be glossed as 'fenced, barricaded or stockaded')
Texas: 1883. A wide plateau in Texas and New Mexico, the site of a trail from San Antonio, Texas, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, used by early Spanish explorers. Cobos indicates that 'Stockaded Plain' or 'Palisaded Plain' would be a more appropriate translation of the Spanish llano estacado than 'Staked Plain,' which is how the name of the region is generally translated into English. He notes that Spanish explorers named the plain after a rimrock formation that resembled a stone fortress. The assumption by English speakers that the plain was named for a trail marked by stakes driven into the earth is a misconception or simply the product of a poor translation.
