«Красношеий», деревенщина. Первоначально redneck было унижающим, оскорбительным словом, означающим бедного белого фермера в Юго-Западных штатах Америки. Из-за плохого питания они часто болели пеллагрой (кожная болезнь), одним из симптомов которой было покраснение кожи. Есть и другая версия происхождения этого слова: шеи краснели от длительной работы под палящими лучами южного солнца.
