61 Reconstruction
Реконструкция Юга, период, когда после Гражданской войны штаты Юга снова вошли в США. В них были образованы военные округа для обеспечения выборов и создания новых правительств штатов. В эти правительства вошло много выходцев из северных штатов [*carpetbaggers], поскольку южане, скомпрометированные связями с Конфедерацией, не принимались на службу. Новые правительства штатов одобрили 3 поправки к Конституции США: Тринадцатую, запрещавшую рабство; Четырнадцатую, запрещавшую бывшим сторонникам Конфедерации занимать общественные должности до разрешения Конгресса; Пятнадцатую, гарантирующую избирательные права неграм. Как только штат одобрял Тринадцатую и Четырнадцатую поправки, он снова принимался в состав Соединённых Штатов и получал право на представительство в Конгрессе. Реконструкция закончилась в 1876, когда последние войска были выведены с Юга. Реконструкция, проводимая в основном по инициативе Респ. партии, созданной в северных штатах, зашла значительно дальше, чем предлагал президент Линкольн незадолго до своей смерти. Большинство белых южан были недовольны отстранением от участия в восстановлении Юга и не хотели расставаться со своим привилегированным положением, что привело к созданию Ку-клукс-клана [*Ku Klux Klan] и определило на многие годы недоверие к Респ. партииСША.
