Русское быстрый имеет несколько эквивалентов в английском языке: fast, rapid, swift и quick. Fast и rapid употребляются атрибутивно и могут взаимозаменяться: fast horse и rapid horse, fast trip и rapid trip. Однако fast чаще сочетается с существительным, обозначающим движущийся объект, a rapid – с существительными, обозначающими действие, движение: fast train, fast boat, но rapid current, rapid gait, rapid progress, rapid flight of time. Quick и swift могут употребляться как атрибутивно, так и предикативно и могут взаимозаменяться: quick glance и swift glance, to be quick in running и to be swift in running.
