(кафедральный собор Рим. епархии; на этом месте во 2 в. находилась обширная городская усадьба семьи Латеранов ( the family of the Laterani); она досталась в нач. 4 в. супруге императора Константина Великого Фаусте ( Fausta), по желанию которой вся недвижимость была пожалована папе Сильвестру I (314-327), и стала, с многочисленными переделками и постройками, местопребыванием Пап Римских ( patriarchium) вплоть до их бегства в Авиньон в 1309; современный собор-дворец был построен после многочисленных пожаров и разрушений по приказу папы Сикста V в 1586 по планам Доменико Фонтана ( Domenico Fontana)) the Lateran Basilica, the Church of St. John Lateran, итал.
