В 1539 этот район в поисках золота исследовал францисканец Маркос де Ница [Niza, Marcos de]. Первые поселения появились на берегах р. Рио-Гранде в 1598, у Санта-Фе в 1610. Поселенцы то торговали, то воевали с индейскими племенами апачей [*Apaches], команчей [*Comanches] и навахо [*Navahos]. С 1821 началась торговля по дороге от Санта-Фе до р. Миссури. Санта-Фе был захвачен войсками ген. Стивена Кирни в 1846 с началом войны с Мексикой. В 1850 на захваченных в ходе войны с Мексикой землях была образована Территория Нью-Мексико ( включавшая тж. территорию нынешних штатов Юта и Аризона). В 1870-е гг. скотоводы вели так наз. «войну округа Линкольн» [Lincoln County War], в которой ведущую роль играл Билли ( Кид) Бонни [*Billy (the Kid) Bonney]. С 1912 Нью-Мексико — 47-й штат США. В 1916 на Коламбус [Columbus] с территории Мексики совершил рейд крестьянский генерал Панча Вилья [Villa, Pancha]. Достопримечательности: Карлсбадские пещеры [Carlsbad Caverns], объявленные национальным заповедником, имеют пещеры на 3-х уровнях, и одна из них является самым большим пещерным залом, площадью 1500 на 300 футов и высотою 300 футов; Национальный заповедник Белые Пески — крупнейшие в мире запасы гипса; скала с надписями в Национальном заповеднике Эль-Морро [El Morro National Monument]; остатки форта Юнион [Fort Union]; памятные места, связанные с легендарным Билли Кидом [*Billy (the Kid) Bonney] в г. Линкольн [Lincoln]; пещерные поселения в Джайле [*Gila Cliff Dwellings Nat’l Monument].
