Состоит из материковой части и большого числа островов [ Alexander Archipelago, Aleutian Islands, Pribilof Islands, Kodiak Island]. Омывается Северным Ледовитым и Тихим океанами. На Тихоокеанском побережье - Аляскинский хребет [ Alaska Range]; внутренняя часть - плато высотой от 1200 м на востоке до 600 м на западе; переходит в низменность. На севере - хребет Брукса [ Brooks Range], за которым расположена Арктическая низменность [ Arctic coastal plain]. На Тихоокеанском побережье климат умеренный, морской, относительно мягкий; в остальных районах - арктический и субарктический континентальный, с суровыми зимами. Основные отрасли экономики - добыча полезных ископаемых, прежде всего нефти (в районе Залива Прудхо [ Prudhoe Bay] и полуострова Кенай [ Kenai Peninsula]), рыболовство, туризм. Аляска была территорией России после ее исследования Витусом Берингом и Александром Чириковым в 1741. Постоянное поселение русских [ Russian-Americans] было основано в 1784 на острове Кадьяк Григорием Шелеховым (сейчас единственное целиком русское поселение - г. Николаевск [Nikolaevsk] на полуострове Кенай, основано и заселено с 1968 старообрядцами). Аляска была куплена США у России по инициативе госсекретаря У. Сьюарда [ Seward, William Henry] в 1867 за 7,2 млн. долл., что составляет около 2 центов за акр земли. Регион развивался медленно вплоть до начала золотой лихорадки на Клондайке [ Klondike Gold Rush] 1896. Добыча нефти стала играть огромную роль с 1970-х гг. после открытия месторождений и прокладки Трансаляскинского трубопровода [ Trans-Alaska Pipeline]. Хотя штат один из наименее населенных в стране, в 1970-е годы сюда переехали многие новые жители, привлеченные вакансиями в нефтяной промышленности и на транспорте, а в 1980-е годы прирост населения составил более 36 процентов. Около 75 процентов населения белые, уроженцы США. В штате около 86 тыс. коренных жителей - индейцы [ Athabascan, Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian], эскимосы [ Eskimo] и алеуты [ Aleut]. В штате живет также небольшое число потомков русских. Среди основных религиозных групп - католики, православные, пресвитериане, баптисты и методисты.
