Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `myrrh, sweet-smelling wood of the myrrh-plant' (Sapph.. Thphr.).Derivatives: μυρρίς, - ίδος f. `sweet cicely, Myrrhis odorata' (Dsc. 4, 115) beside μυρίς (Thphr. CP 6, 9, 3) from (after?) μύρον (cf. below). μυρρίτης (- τις) m. (f.) name of a stone (Plin.; "myrrhae colorem habet"), of a wine ( Edict. Diocl.); Redard 58 a. 98; also μυρρίνης (sc. οἶνος; hell. com.), if not from μύρτος or μύρον (s.vv.).Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Sem.Etymology: From Semit., cf. Aram. mūrā, Hebr. mōr, Arab. murr `myrrh' (Lewy Fremdw. 42ff.); here also μυρίκη? (s.v.); Lat. LW [loanword] murra, murrina. -- After Ath. 15, 688 c μύρρα came from μύρον; the close semantic relation of these words, which also makes a correct distinction of the derivations often difficult, might have facilitated the supposed loss of the anlaut. σ- in μύρον. In Greek μύρρα was redeemed by the not related σμύρνα, σμύρνη (s.v.), which had the same meaning; this may be a backformation from the adj. Σμυρναία prop. `Smyrnaean', a.o. as adjunct of μύρρα.
