1925-1984Nacido en Madera, California, estudia la carrera de Derecho, que no llego a terminar, y se alista en el ejercito. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se empieza a interesar por el teatro. En la Universidad del Sur de California consigue culminar los estudios de Arte Dramatico y empieza su andadura teatral en Los Angeles. En 1949 es contratado por la cadena de television KLAC, donde recorrio toda la escala social de trabajos, que desembocaron en un contrato con la Allied Artists de Walter Wanger. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula. Pero fue en el rodaje de la tercera, Mayor Dundee, en el que se iniciaria la maldicion que parecio pesar sobre los hombros de Peckinpah, que convertiria, en lo sucesivo, cada rodaje en una aventura que nunca se sabia si alcanzaria el exito. Por ejemplo, fue apartado de la direccion de El rey del juego (The Cincinnati Kid, Norman Jewison, 1965) que, con toda seguridad, el hubiera elevado a una altura de la que, por desgracia, carecio el filme en su estado definitivo, pese al magnifico guion que le sirvio de soporte. Saltando de productora a productora, incluso de pais a pais, ya que paso un par de anos en Gran Bretana, donde rueda Perros de paja (Straw Dogs, 1971), uno de sus filmes mas conocidos y apreciados, llega a conformar una esplendida filmografia que solo baja de nivel en sus ultimas peliculas. Sam Peckinpah es el maximo representante del western crepuscular. Su primera pelicula, The Deadly Companions, pertenece al genero, y a el dedico lo mejor de sus esfuerzos, radicalmente incomprendidos por parte de los productores. Duelo en la alta sierra es un filme de un vigor inusual, lleno de nostalgia, riguroso y bello como los paisajes por los que discurre. Mayor Dundee es la gran obra frustrada del director. En el estado en que la dejaron los responsables de Columbia sigue siendo una pelicula soberbia, esbozo de la obra definitiva que pudo llegar a ser. Grupo salvaje es la pelicula emblematica de Peckinpah. Todas las discusiones acerca del uso de la violencia en sus filmes arrancan de esta amarga reflexion sobre la vida y los seres humanos. 1916-2002El reconocimiento critico a George Sidney es menor del que, en justicia, le corresponde. Empieza en Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, donde permanecera hasta 1955, dirigiendo cortos comicos de la serie Our Gang y de Pete Smith. Despues, es promovido a director de filmes de serie B, pero es su llegada a la unidad de produccion de Arthur Freed la que marcara su futuro como gran especialista del musical. La mayor parte de su filmografia esta impregnada, de un modo u otro, por este genero, aunque, en principio, la trama corresponda a un genero distante de el. Existe un ejemplo modelico: Los tres mosqueteros (The Three Musketeers, 1948), filme basado en la famosa novela de Alexandre Dumas, despide aroma de musical a lo largo de todo su metraje. Un detalle deberia darle la pista al no iniciado: la presencia, como protagonista, de Gene Kelly, que tambien trabajo con Sidney en Levando an clas (Anchors Aweigh, 1945). Lo dicho en relacion con Los tres mosqueteros es tambien aplicable a Scaramouche (1952). Deja Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer despues de dirigir a Esther Williams en La amada de Jupiter (Jupi- ter’s Darling, 1955) y se establece como productor independiente para Columbia. Mucho antes habia dirigido dos estupendos westerns. 1904-1977Nacido en Paris, hijo del prestigioso director de origen frances Maurice Tourneur, coincide con el en los Estados Unidos en los anos 10, los de mayor esplendor de Maurice. Entre 1931 y 1934 dirige cuatro peliculas en Francia, y despues una serie de cortos en Norteamerica para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. En 1939, para la misma productora, empieza a dirigir sus largometrajes “americanos”, pero si Jacques Tourneur pasa a la historia del cine como realizador, que lo hara con pleno merecimiento, ello se habra de deber, entre otras, a dos circunstancias: la serie de filmes RKO, de sutil terror psicologico, rodados para el productor Val Lewton, de la que La mujer pantera (Cat People, 1942) es su primera y acaso mas noble expresion, y por un punado de westerns sencillos, transparentes, dignos de admiracion autentica.En ningun caso hay que olvidar, no obstante, modelicos filmes de genero como Retorno al pasado (Out of the Past, 1947), magnifica pelicula negra, o La mujer pirata (Anne of the Indies, 1951), deslumbrante muestra del cine de piratas. El “arte de lo invisible” del que hace gala Tourneur en su famosisima escena de la piscina en La mujer pantera lo traslada a la casi totalidad de su filmografia. En particular, Wichita, que muestra las andanzas de un Wyatt Earp que aun no habia protagonizado el celebre duelo en O.K. 1911-1982Bailarin en Broadway, Charles Walters es un hombre del musical, y a el dedica sus mejores esfuerzos profesionales como coreografo y realizador. Debuta en Hollywood como coreografo de la pelicula RKO Siete noches en Nueva York (Seven Days Leave, Tim Whe lan, 1942). De inmediato, es contratado por Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer para coreografiar, por ejemplo, Meet Me in St. Louis (Vincente Minnelli, 1944), hasta que, en 1947, tiene ocasion de dirigir Good News. Sus mejores y mas populares peliculas, como Easter Parade (1948) y Lili (1952), son musicales e, incluso, los dos westerns que figuran aqui, uno de ellos rodado en colaboracion y acreditado como obra de George Sidney, son tambien musicales. En 1966 dice adios al cine, y a la Metro, con la produccion Columbia Apartamento para tres (Walk, Don’t Run), en esta ocasion una comedia.
