Entre The Tor nado y Buenos amigos (Just Pals, 1920), primera de sus peliculas de la que se conservan copias, rueda un total de 37 filmes de dos, tres y cinco bobinas, siempre para Universal, como productora o, al me nos, distribuidora. Buenos amigos es, precisamente, la primera que realiza para Fox. En adelante, mientras duro el cine mudo, fue esta quien produjo o distribuyo los filmes de John Ford, de los que se conservan solo otros once.En total, dirige 67 peliculas mudas, de las que se conservan doce, tres de ellas westerns. Estos son: A prueba de balas (Straight Sho oting, 1917), la archifamosa El caballo de hierro (The Iron Horse, 1924), y Tres hombres malos (Three Bad Men, 1926). El primero, La diligencia abre la puerta al western moderno, en un momento en el que la produccion del genero estaba mayoritariamente ocupada por filmes de serie de una hora de duracion, la llamada serie B, y seriales diversos. El ultimo, El gran combate, es un emocionante canto a la dignidad del ser humano. Director apreciado en la ultima decada del cine mu do, Alfred Santell cruzo la barrera que, a finales de la decada de los 20, separaba a este del naciente cine sonoro con notable exito, un exito que hoy nos sorprende, pues el realizador ha sido completamente olvidado. Nos quedan de el, en el ambito del western, dos tempranas entregas del popular Cisco Kid, aunque la primera de ellas sea encubierta. 1. Voz procedente del comparativo latino iunior ('más joven'), cuyo uso actual en español se ha revitalizado por influjo del inglés junior. En español debe escribirse con tilde por ser voz llana terminada en consonante distinta de -n o -s. Aunque está notablemente extendida la pronunciación inglesa [yúnior], en español debe decirse [júnior], tal como se escribe, con sonido /j/ inicial, de forma análoga al término eclesiástico junior (pron. [juniór]), que procede del mismo étimo latino. Se opone asénior y hoy se usa con los sentidos siguientes:a) Se pospone al nombre propio de una persona para distinguirla de un pariente de más edad que tiene el mismo nombre, normalmente el padre: " Julio Iglesias júnior edita su primer disco cantado en inglés" ( DNavarra [Esp.] 29.4.99). En español, para distinguir al hijo del padre se usa tradicionalmente la voz hijo, siempre preferible al anglicismo: "La Dama de las Camelias, de Alejandro Dumas hijo" (Cabrujas Día [Ven. 1979]).b) En el ámbito deportivo, '[deportista] de la categoría inmediatamente inferior a la sénior': "Federer, ex campeón júnior de Wimbledon, acabó con el reinado de Pete Sampras" ( FVigo [Esp.] 3.7.01). Como sustantivo, es común en cuanto al género: " La júnior Olga Sánchez y Eva Cruz entraron por delante de Sobrino" ( Abc [Esp.] 28.5.89). Como adjetivo significa también 'de los júniores': " La plata se consiguió en la categoría júnior" ( Abc [Esp.] 27.9.82).c) Referido a un profesional, 'de menor edad y, por tanto, con menos experiencia que otro': " Mira por encima del hombro a algún crítico júnior" ( Universal [Ven.] 15.9.96). A veces designa al profesional de menor rango, independientemente de su edad.2. Aunque para el plural suele emplearse mayoritariamente la forma anglicada * júniors, se recomienda acomodar esta palabra a la morfología española y usar el pluraljúniores: " Se han obtenido los campeonatos de Europa y del mundo júniores" ( País [Esp.] 1.8.84); "Martina está jugando con insultante superioridad, como si las restantes jugadoras fuesen júniores a su lado" ( Abc [Esp.] 2.7.97).
