    Die Rolle des Führers der Oktoberrevolution von 1917 in der russischen Geschichte findet heute verschiedene Einschätzungen – von eindeutig negativen bis zu eindeutig positiven. Dass Lenin persönliche Machtansprüche fremd waren und dass es ihm um das Wohl und die kulturelle Besserstellung der Armen ging, wird ihm oft hoch angerechnet. Dass unter ihm eine systematische Ausrottung andersdenkender Intellektueller im Lande und ein grausamer Terror eingeleitet wurde, stößt auf eine scharfe Verurteilung. Von vielen einfachen Russen wird Lenin auch heute verehrt: das Mausoleum am Roten Platz soll – obwohl diese Form der Totenverehrung nicht mit der russischen Tradition übereinstimmt – vorerst erhalten bleiben.

    Zitat:... dass wir diese Politik ernsthaft und auf lange Zeit, aber natürlich, wie das schon richtig bemerkt worden ist, nicht für ewig durchführen (W. I. Lenin. Werke, Bd. 33, S. 144).
    Lenin meinte damit die NÖP (= Neue ökonomische Politik). Heute bezeichnet man mit dem Ausdruck:
    1) jede Tätigkeit, Arbeit usw., die für längere Zeit geplant ist;
    2) (scherzh.) etw., was sich in die Länge zu ziehen droht.

    Als einen Schritt vorwärts bezeichnete Lenin den Beitrag zur Schaffung einer marxistischen revolutionären Partei, den der im Jahre 1903 abgehaltene II. Parteitag der SDAPR geleistet hat ( Annahme des Programms und des Statuts der Partei), als zwei Schritte zurück die Haltung der Menschewiki, die den Zentralismus und die Disziplin als organisatorische Prinzipien der Partei nicht anerkannten und nach dem Parteitag eine spalterische Tätigkeit betrieben. Heute wird mit dem Ausdurck ein Auf-der-Stelle-Treten bezeichnet.
