Так он застает библиотекаршу Элси Брейден, когда та выбрасывает сумку, украденную у посетительницы библиотеки. Элси задолжала банку крупную сумму, но знает, что Ривз не заявит на нее в полицию, поскольку она догадалась о цели его ночных прогулок. При ограблении Ривз тянется за револьвером, но гангстер ранит его. В перестрелке Эмили получает смертельное ранение. 3 гангстера прячутся на ферме Стадтов, семьи амманитов, связав хозяев и заткнув им рты кляпами, – там же, с ними, находится и Шелли Мартин, чью машину они угнали вместе с хозяином. Мартину удается освободиться и убить 2 гангстеров. 3-й вот-вот расправится с ним, но в этот момент глава семьи Стадт, противник всякого насилия, всаживает ему вилы между лопаток и спасает жизнь инженеру. На больничной койке Ривз признается Линде, что подглядывал за ней. Та же приходит к Бойду, и тот с грустью рассказывает о трагической попытке примириться с женой. Мартин опять завоевал уважение сына. Мальчик приводит к нему одноклассников, которым хочется посмотреть на «героя».
       ►  Абсолютно успешный пример того, как можно использовать криминальный сюжет для анализа общества. На основе превосходного сценария, все действие которого укладывается в 24 часа, Флайшер рисует плетеный узор, удивительно трезвый, виртуозный и реалистичный, и показывает нам самые разные социальные слои городка, внезапно, ненавязчиво и без лишних хитростей проявляя все его проблемы, конфликты, изъяны, столь разнообразные и столь универсальные. Этот анализ не описателен и не статичен: фоном ему служат динамичные события, чьим катализатором и детонатором становится криминальный сюжет. Фильм связан с важнейшим аспектом творчества Флайшера: это притча о насилии, неоднозначном явлении (по мнению режиссера), спрятаться от которого не удастся никому. В конце этого напряженного дня главе семьи амманитов придется пересмотреть убеждения и нравственные законы, переступить через них, чтобы спасти жизнь человеку. Подобно Преминджеру и Энтони Мэнну, Флайшер мгновенно усваивает широкоэкранный формат и начинает обращаться с ним как художник и знаток. В каждом фильме он использует характеристики нового формата по-новому, сообразно специфическим задачам картины. В фильме 20 000 лье под водой, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea Флайшер исследовал его зрелищность. Здесь широкоэкранный формат помогает пристальнее следить за передвижениями героев в пространстве, за пересечениями их судеб и характеров. Зрелище этого проницательного анализа, воплощенного в плотной, лаконичной и мастерской режиссуре, дает пищу и глазу, и уму.
